Talk With Joe Gilmore

Today we had a talk with a freelance designer who works in Leeds called Joe Gilmore.

His graphics website: qubikdesign.com
his arts website: joe.quibik.com

Few wise worse from him:
>Concentrate on what you enjoy doing

>Doind FREE jobs isnt all that bad. Even do some free work for an exhibition could be a way of networkin with other people in the arts industry. It will also allow you to get your name out there and also free work will push you to work with a small budget and you can do what you want..so you can really show off and show people what you are capable of.

>When laying type onto any design..KERNING IS IMPORTANT. Making equal spaces between letters shows you are a designer who likes attention to detail and makes you the better designer.

>Networking is definitely important..always give out your business cards! Oh and a company called Aubergine in Nottingham can print business cards for free!

>Don't be put off by in-house styles. Use it to keep people happy..but add your innovation to it to make it your own work :)

>Overlaying big titles in a different colour swatches is interesting and don't be scared to do it..providing you can read the other text behind.

and FINALLY

>Try getting yourself on flicker or any networking sights and start adding images to your favorites as there may be a job you do in future that you may want to use them for..then you can think of buying the images providing the clients approve.

>Simple ideas are better. The way you fold paper or add additional applications for e.g foiling for lettering will make design more interesting.

When sending jobs for print and designing tips.

1.When doing a multiple page document with different colour systems, you need a bigger budget to allow this.

2 X colour-pantone is cheaper
CMYK process will cost more
Thicker stocks for covers will cost more.

2. If you were to do a run for less than 1000 you can get it printed digitally. However over 1000 will need to use th CMYK process.

BELOW A FEW EXAMPLES OF HIS WORK.
